Robert and Josie, his wife of 46 years, became members of Chapel By The Sea in 1981. In August 2020, Josie went home to Heaven after a 5-year battle with cancer. Robert and daughter Kristin have since established The Josie Fund, a scholarship program for African nursing student in Sierra Leone, West Africa, where Josie taught nursing with the US Peace Corp in the early 1970’s.
Active in his church and community, Robert’s building company constructed the two classroom additions at the Chapel in the 1980’s. Robert also served as the founding board chairman of the Coastal Pregnancy Care Center in Morehead City.
In 1990 the Kornegays joined Mercy Ships for over a decade of missionary service in more than 30 nations in Europe, Africa, and Central America. During that time, Robert led the Community Development program on the M/V Anastasis in Africa, the Mercy Ships Communications Center in Switzerland, and the Resource Development program at the International Operations Center in Texas.
In 2005 Robert was accepted into the Veritas Graduate School of Apologetics at Southern Evangelical Seminary and the Kornegays moved to the Charlotte area, where he worked in the seminary administration while earning his Master of Arts in Religion degree.
The Kornegays returned to Carteret County in 2008, where Robert served as the Director of the Carteret General Hospital Foundation for two years. In addition to his current part-time pastoral duties at Chapel By The Sea, Robert is an active advocate for the Coastal Pregnancy Care Center and is the Chaplain of the local Trail Life USA chapter.
